YELLOW BELT TIP & VIDEOS

One-step sparring is a form of basic self-defence, based on the principles of blocking, avoiding, and striking. Be sure to pay close attention to the footwork, as this sets you up for the rest of the movements.

One-step sparring requires you to practice with a partner, so please be careful as they can cause injury.

The combination kick in yellow belt introduces two of the more difficult movements: side kick and reverse turning kick. So remember to revisit the fundamental movements if you need help. For your side kick, remember to always bend your knee – back towards your chest – before landing so that you have a good base to move on to the next kick. These kicks will be featured in all our patterns, one-step sparring, kicking combinations and are often seen in free-sparring, so it’s always a good idea to come back to revisit these taekwondo fundamentals.

Yellow belt patterns are slightly longer than our previous white belt patterns and incorporates different blocks, so keep an eye on the actions of the arms and hands. These patterns also move in different directions compared to our white belt and involve some tricky footwork.
